Illuminated Courses are designed to enrich your life spiritually, aesthetically, and intellectually. These online spiritually-oriented courses are based on a video format, and enable you to view our courses at your own time, study at your own pace and still receive expert instruction by experts. Present topics range from Rumi’s poetry and teachings, the path of Radical Love, getting inside the heart of the Qur’an, the legacies of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, and studying the lives and teachings of Muslim sages. More topics will be added, insha’allah. These courses are open to everyone, regardless of age, background, and location. Illuminated Courses is not affiliated with any University. It does not charge university tuition, nor offer university credit.
About Illuminated Tours
Educational tours with a focus on the rich spiritual heritages of Turkey and Morocco. Go beyond the surface of these ancient civilizations under the supervision of our team of experts. Stay in boutique accommodations, benefit from expert-led on-site lectures, intimate evening discussions and concerts, and rejuvenate your heart and soul. The two separate programs to Turkey or Morocco have a focus on the rich spiritual heritages of these beautiful and ancient cultures, and offer a special focus on the art and architecture, culture, and religious traditions of each. These tours are open to all friends from all backgrounds. We have been taking friends to these sites since 2002, and have had over 1,000 participants from over twenty countries take part in our programs. The Turkey program is led by Omid Safi, and the Morocco programs by Courtney Erwin and Adnane Raiss. Illuminated Tours is not affiliated with any University. Omid’s passion for teaching has been recognized through the ten times that he has been nominated for professor of the year awards. He is currently a professor at Duke University specializing in Islamic spirituality and contemporary thought. A leading Muslim public intellectual, Omid is committed to the intersection of spirituality and social justice.
Omid has published extensively on the foundational sources of Islam and Sufism. His Memories of Muhammad is a biography of the Prophet Muhammad. His most recent book is Radical Love: Teachings from the Islamic Mystical Tradition (published by Yale).
Omid is also deeply committed to liberationist prophetic traditions in the legacy of Martin Luther King, Rabbi Heschel, and Malcolm X. He has been invited by the family of Dr. King to speak at Ebenezer Church on the relevance of Dr. King for today’s America, and has delivered the Martin Luther King keynote in the annual national MLK service.
Omid often appears as an expert on Islam in the New York Times, Newsweek, Washington Post, PBS, NPR, NBC, BBC, CNN and other outlets. He is a recent columnist for On Being, and now has a podcast (“Sufi Heart”) at Be Here Now. His Illuminated Tours have taken more than a 1,000 friends from over twenty countries to Turkey and Morocco since 2002, and he is now offering Illuminated Courses for online offerings on spiritual traditions open to seekers of all backgrounds.
